A free press is essential to sustaining a functioning democracy. Journalists serve as a vital check on power, relying on rigorous reporting to maintain an informed citizenry, uncover corruption, shine a light on systemic failures, and inspire change and progress.

Deep financial losses within the for-profit journalistic sector have threatened to undermine the watchdog reporting necessary for transparency and accountability. To preserve the ability of our government and society to function freely, fairly, and effectively, it is imperative that newsrooms have the support they need to investigate, research, gather data, follow evidence, and publish news that changes lives.

We must safeguard our democratic institutions by strengthening a press that embraces the principles of fairness, objectivity, balance, and ethics. To that end, we support nonprofit news-gathering organizations that advance the values of freedom of the press and produce the highest-quality journalism.

We do not have any editorial input in the organizations we support, respecting and preserving their independence and autonomy.

We seek to strengthen a free press that is fair, transparent, and ethical. Our support focuses on:

1. Statehouse and local news outlets that cover policy and keep up with legislative activity.

2. Investigative outlets that pursue deeply reported and complicated stories.

3. Issue-specific news organizations that deploy journalists who are subject matter experts to examine, explore, and investigate issues that dovetail with our research interests.

4. Innovation that leverages creative solutions that fill gaps, meet needs, and create a sustainable future for nonprofit news.
