Position Overview

The Arnold Ventures Public Finance team seeks to identify and pursue sustainable fiscal policy on a broad scale. This includes policies that will provide an adequate, stable revenue base and that don’t hinder growth, higher wages, etc. — and policies that will provide an adequate safety net without burdening future generations with debt. The Public Finance team will work toward developing an evidence-based public finance agenda that strategically informs stakeholders and policymakers. This will include efforts across items related to tax, fiscal, and budget policy, and developing evidence and analysis that supports the design of policies that become law.

Arnold Ventures seeks to add a dynamic team member that will support the Public Finance team’s strategic and operational efforts. The Director of Public Finance will serve as an advisor and counsel to Public Finance team leadership and staff, manage operational activities, and create and maintain cross-departmental relationships. The Director of Public Finance will also help research, analyze, develop, and manage high-impact projects in the field of public finance.

Core Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the Public Finance team’s day-to-day operations in coordination with the Executive Vice President of Public Finance to maximize the team’s alignment and impact
  • Support and provide thought partnership to the Executive Vice President of Public Finance on strategy development and special projects as needed
  • Provide strategic guidance to the Public Finance team around engagement with Arnold Ventures’ Board of Directors
  • Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders, such as national and state advocacy organizations, practitioners, grassroots partners, the business community, and other funders
  • Research, develop, evaluate, and track potential investments/grants within the Public Finance team’s priority areas
  • Present and make investment/grant recommendations to Arnold Ventures’ Board of Directors
  • Execute and manage investments approved by Arnold Ventures’ Board of Directors
  • Collaborate with Arnold Ventures staff to explore and develop cross-initiative investment opportunities

Required Qualifications

  • 7-10 years of relevant work experience
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred in a relevant field such as public policy, political science, economics, business, or law
  • Deep understanding of economics, finance, and public finance policy
  • Ability to translate complex research findings into key takeaways for diverse audiences
  • Successful track record of using research to drive change
  • Knowledge of advanced methods, statistics and research designs, and experience interfacing with senior-level stakeholders about research findings related to public finance programs and policies
  • Proven commitment to and passion for public finance reform and policy
  • Previous project manager on large, complex and/or high profile programs or program areas to ensure operational alignment with strategic vision
