Position Overview

Arnold Venture’s communications and external affairs team aims to effectively position the Foundation as a trusted champion for evidence-based, nonpartisan policy solutions to America’s toughest challenges. This includes both communications through original content creation and distribution of our policy priorities, and direct engagement and relationship building with targeted policy stakeholders. 

We are seeking a Chief of Staff to play a key role in setting the team’s annual and multi-year strategies, interacting with key internal and external stakeholders, measuring key performance metrics of the organization, and executing special projects. This individual will be the Executive Vice President of Communications & External Affairs’ (EVP) right-hand, participating in high level meetings, traveling frequently, preparing briefings, conducting research, and owning targeted initiatives. In addition, the Chief of Staff will interface with the AV Executive team to integrate work across teams and functions. This position will be located in our Houston office and report to the EVP

Core Research & Advising Responsibilities

  • Be a thought partner to the EVP to determine and prioritize decisions, manage time, prepare materials, and brainstorm strategic objectives
  • Provide high-level, quick, and in-depth analysis of policy, politics, and industry trends 
  • As needed, serve as surrogate for EVP at meetings and presentations
  • Support the EVP in creating presentations materials, background briefs, and talking points. Maintain post-meeting debriefs and communicate to relevant stakeholders
  • Support the writing of op-eds, articles, speeches, memos, and thank you letters to partners and government officials
  • Produce consolidated reporting to EVP, including tracking, reporting of internal documents that require coordinating data and information from around the organization
  • Respond to a variety of special projects

Core Operations Responsibilities

  • Manage relationships cross-functionally within AV teams
  • Team project manager to make sure we are on track for major initiatives – short and long term Make sure we are thinking long term and not just what is immediately in front of us
  • Help to run team meetings, team building, culture creation
  • Plan and execute leadership development of Comms and External Affairs leadership team 
  • Manage near and long-term meeting agendas for EVP. Screen requests for time/​opportunities, gather backgrounds on meeting attendees, ensure needed support from team in attendance and meeting materials
  • Attend meetings with EVP, synthesize notes and facilitate action items and follow-up items, ensure logging in CRM
  • Strategize, develop, and track key performance metrics for the organization to inform status and future opportunities
  • Spearhead and implement programs, systems, workflows, or processes that strengthen political knowledge and impact, improve tracking and performance evaluation, or reduce redundancies. Examples include designing and maintaining databases with member profiles, historical giving analysis, and political engagement activity 
  • Work with Finance to manage the annual department budget for Comms and External Affairs Coordinate with AV Legal, Finance, and Accounting teams for necessary information, compliance disclosures and reports

Core Portfolio Management Responsibilities

  • Develop strategic focus areas and policy priorities for the Immigration, Climate & Clean Energy, and organ donation portfolios
  • Research, evaluate, and track potential investments within the Immigration and Climate priority areas
  • Present and make investment/​grant recommendations 
  • Execute and manage investments, including working with grantees to develop strategic campaign plans, establishing performance metrics, and monitoring performance
  • Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders, coalitions, experts, new and existing grantees, policymakers, advocacy organizations, and other funders
  • Collaborate with AV teams to explore and develop cross-initiative investment opportunities

Required Qualifications

  • 10 years of relevant work experience 
  • Meaningful and demonstrated history of operational efficiency and optimization
  • Exceptional project manager with extraordinary organization skills
  • Outstanding data mining skills, particularly in policy analysis and political insights
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Strong command of modern technology (MS Office, Google Workspace, Calendly, Zoom, etc.)
