Position: Criminal Justice Analyst

Arnold Ventures' Criminal Justice initiative aims to advance community safety and the values of fairness, effectiveness, and racial justice. We fund innovative work in five domains: Policing, Pretrial Justice, Community Supervision, Prisons, and Reintegration. The Initiative works with teams of experts from inside and outside government and across disciplines to reform the U.S. criminal justice system through research, evidence, testing innovative pilot programs, and policy change.

We are seeking a Criminal Justice Analyst to help provide research, analytical, and operational support to the corrections team. This individual will work closely with team members on diverse substantive projects and gain practical hands-on experience in supporting the development and management of research, policy, and advocacy initiatives and high-impact philanthropic projects in the field of criminal justice. The Criminal Justice Analyst will report to the Director of Criminal Justice working on this domain.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide analytical and operational support for the corrections team’s funding initiatives, including active collaboration with senior team members on grants management, performance tracking, and oversight;
  • Research, develop, evaluate, and track potential policy areas and projects, with a focus on the topics of community supervision, prison policies, sentencing and legislative reforms, fines and fees, reentry and reintegration;
  • Compose, fact-check, and edit policy papers, team strategies, presentations, letters, website content, and other written materials;
  • Create data visualizations and visual presentations that effectively communicate research/analysis findings, as well as team’s objectives and strategies;
  • Coordinate and actively contribute to meetings on evidence-based reform with government officials, researchers, foundation officials, program providers, and other stakeholders;
  • Conduct ad-hoc research/analysis of organizations, programs, policies, local governments, leaders, academic papers, open source justice data, and the state of the field in particular policy and practice areas to help team members develop research and policy initiatives.

Essential Skills, Experience, and Abilities

  • One to two years of relevant work experience—including part-time work or internships—preferably in positions involving systemic policy reform, research, and project management;
  • Proven analytical skills, with demonstrated experience synthesizing and assessing information;
  • Thorough and attentive to detail in both substantive and operational tasks;
  • Excellent listening and communication skills, including the ability to absorb, analyze, and convey complex ideas in a clear and concise manner verbally and in writing;
  • Exceptional organization skills and ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects;
  • Capacity to thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced work environment;
  • Ability to overcome unforeseen obstacles and see projects through to completion;
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently;
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and other standard computer software;
  • Proficiency in data visualization and visual presentation software strongly preferred.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
